Capturing the top jobs

19 Jan

After a few years of university education plus a few years of developing your career in one or more jobs, with a portfolio of successful work under your belt it could just be that it’s time to consider pushing for promotion. Going for the top jobs is as much of a change in mindset as it is a practical exercise. Recognition that you have the experience and expertise to lead a team or drive a business forward can be the first step on the climb towards the top. Don’t get caught in the trap of settling for less, especially when job dissatisfaction sets in.

Some advice for capturing the top jobs: First, don’t rush, there is no hurry to take that next step (which may not be the right one) just to get out of your current situation. If career satisfaction and financial reward is your goal, getting to the top job is a marathon not a sprint.

Have a plan, which includes things like organising a portfolio of work and sending out CVs. Next, do some research – look at the ins and outs off specific careers. The number of jobs available these days means that similar jobs may in fact have very different job descriptions, so be sure of what you want and what companies have to offer.
